Richard Hell & the Voidoids - Blank Generation

Genre: Punk
Year: 1977
About: This album is essential to the early punk scene. Hailing from New York's infamous CBGB's, Richard Hell epitomizes the punk spirit at its most important time. Jazz and funk were shown to be compatible with the punk aesthetic. He shows that "punk" is also passion and poetry. Hell's lyrics echo the voice of a generation, a "Blank Generation," of ostracized youth.
Sounds Like: Television, Johnny Thunders, Dead Boys, The Neon Boys

Boredoms - Pop Tatari

Genre: Noise, Experimental
Year: 1992
About: This might just be one of the most adventurous albums i've ever heard, and that's saying something for this Japanese group. It has a punk energy to it. I warn you that this is a thoughtfully written, delightfully disgusting mass of chaos that I can totally dig. If you're looking for something new to add to your mix, maybe with a few wild shrieks thrown in, try this out. This one's a trip; a maniacal trip through your conciousness.
Sounds Like: OOIOO, Melt-Banana, Ruins, Afrirampo

King Geedorah - Take Me to Your Leader

Genre: Rap
Year: 2003
About: One of MF Doom's many side projects, this one being based off the Godzilla monster King Ghidorah. Some sick rhymes to be heard. "You should listen to the album for what it is and not expect it to be like the average "rap" stuff you’re probably used to. Geedorah is a space monster. He's not from the Earth. I made it different on purpose. A blend of ill lyrics and instrumentals. To me its way iller than any of the wack shit out now... This whole album is Geedorah's alien perspective on humans. This is done intentionally to show the listener a mirror image of his/herself and the way we see each other. On the album we cover different subjects ranging from race issues to the neglect of children. Some might find the word "Nigger" offensive, or the line about the young girl not being able to read maybe considered a "bad taste" joke. All these insecurities are within us."

A Place to Bury Strangers - A Place to Bury Strangers

Genre: Shoegaze, Indie
Year: 2007
About: Some noisy, angsty shoegaze. Within the heavy distortion are some pretty melodies though, and Oliver Ackermann's vocals scream unfulfilled teenage lust.
Sounds Like: My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, HEALTH

William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops

Genre: Ambient
About: Some of the most beautiful music that has ever graced my ears, all composed using cassettes so old that the tape itself has disintegrated off the roll, turning whatever it was before into an elegant and gorgeous ambient drone. There are four albums based off this concept, and all are equally as good and beautiful. If you have any interest in ambient music, these four albums will quench your emotional thirst.

Stars of the Lid Discography

Genre: Ambient, Drone
About: "Stars of the Lid is a duo specializing in drone-based ambient music. They list among their influences minimalist and electronic composers such as Arvo Pärt, Zbigniew Preisner, Gavin Bryars, and Henryk Gorecki, as well as Talk Talk (both bands have tracks named "Taphead"), post-rock artists Labradford, and ambient innovator Brian Eno. Their songs are largely beatless soundscapes, composed of droning, effects-treated guitars along with piano, strings, and horns; volume swells and feedback fill the gap of rhythmic instruments, providing dynamic movement within the songs. Their sound has been described as "divine, classical drone without the tedious intrusion of drums or vocals"."

Loscil - First Narrows

Genre: Ambient, Electronic
Year: 2004
About: "First Narrows is the third Loscil album and the first in which Scott Morgan uses real instruments and input from other musicians. Using sound sources that ranged from sampled instruments to miscellaneous lo-fi mini-cassette recordings, Morgan generated music on computer by custom programming sequencing and processing designed so that no two performances of the patches would be exactly the same. In turn, Jason Zumpano on fender rhodes piano, Tim Loewen on guitar and Nyla Rany on cello improvised over those electronic sequences. Morgan then edited and mixed the live and premixed sections together."
